A net zero carbon in operation secondary school with renewable heating technology
The development included the demolition of the existing school buildings, excluding the sixth form, and the erection of a two- and three-storey new building. The buildings boast associated indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a part-covered six court multi-use games area (MUGA), external canopies, an energy centre and service compound, covered cycle parking, and motorcycle and car parking.
Sustainability was a key driver on the project. The final design incorporated a biosolar green roof, solar panels, top-notch thermal insulation, and passive ventilation solutions. Three air source heat pumps have been installed, meaning there is no dependency on fossil fuels for heating or hot water. In addition, the team improved the thermal performance of the building with a significant betterment in external wall, floor and roof U-value performance to help drive down energy in use.
